Adding Some Spice to the $20 Challenge

February 23rd, 2007 at 02:52 am

We are scraping the bottom of our warehouse-club-sized container of chives, and our warehouse club no longer carries them. The grocery store charges about four times as much for chives, so today I bought a packet of chive seeds for $3.35 less than the small container of chives in the grocery store spice aisle. If I can grow them (despite my black thumb), I should be able to get more chives for the money, too.

Adding in the $3.35 savings on chives and the continuing income/savings from writing and card making, my account total is once again over my goal of $40 for the quarter -- $42.84

You should have no difficulty in growing chives. In fact, you'll find that you have more than you need. Once I've grown them fresh, I find that they are better preserved by freezing rather than drying.
Plus fresh chives are so much better than dried chives.

I've been growing chives for 8 years. They are so easy. Although I started with 2 nursery grown 4 inch pots instead of seeds. I let them flower at the end of the season, they have such pretty purple flowers that then go to seed and spread the chives further about. I have quite a nice sized patch now. Oregano is another easy herb, even from seed and it is perrenial like chives.

Good luck with the chives, I wish I had a green thumb like my father...he can grow anything me on the other hand, let's just say if plants were human I would be in jail for murder

You can have a black thumb and still grow chives! Also, you can't get rid of them...mine grow back year after year, so it's definitely a good investment. I've had great luck with all the herbs I've tried, and it's definitely cheaper growing and freezing them, rather than buying from a store...
